Club members of the Petoskey Sunrise Rotary Club and the Odawa Casino donate $4,000. to the Marty Van De Car Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Marty Van De Car Memorial Scholarship fund was just set up in June of 2023 and hopes to have the first scholarship awarded in 2024, provided the target endowment level of $25,000 can be reached by the end of this year. This scholarship fund was established through the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation in memory of Marty Van De Car to provide educational opportunities with preference given to an American Indian student graduating from an Emmet County high school.
The donation of four thousand dollars came from an inaugural event put on by the Petoskey Rotary Club in collaboration with the Odawa Casino and it’s fine dining restaurant inside the Petoskey Casino, Sage Restaurant. The First Annual Marty Van De Car Chef’s Challenge was held there on Monday, December 14th from 6 to 9 p.m. and featured a 6 course tasting menu with 3 of the courses having 3 different dishes each to be judged, prepared by 3 different Chef’s in competition. There are plans to host the 2nd Annual event again on the first Monday in December at Sage Restaurant in the Odawa Casino. Follow the Petoskey Sunrise Facebook Page for event details to be shared this Fall.
Also, at next weekend’s 30th Annual Odawa Homecoming Pow Wow, August 12th and 13th, there is a Marty Van De Car Memorial Men’s Woodland Special, a dance that his family has planned and is being sponsored as well by his family, the Odawa Casino Resort, Odawa Economic Affairs Holding Corporation, Northern Shores Community Development and Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts. Awards will be given for first place - $900, second place - $700, third place - $600, and three consolation prizes. Date and Time yet to be posted – watch on line for confirmed details.
